Welcome to the American Academy of Phlebotomy Technicians!


The AAPT is a voluntary, non-governmental, national certification agency established to recognize Phlebotomists who have attained a standard of knowledge through structured training programs or work experience and for the purpose of establishing industry standards and professional code of ethics. AAPT is firmly committed to excellence in certification and education.

About Certification

Many healthcare professionals have earned the recognition and rewards gained from AAPT certification. AAPT is quickly becoming one of the most widely accepted professional certification body in the industry.


By obtaining certification through the AAPT, you join a growing group of distinguished, knowledgeable Phlebotomists. In order to become certified by the AAPT Board you must meet the academic requirements, the experience/training requirements and then successfully complete a certification examination. Certification examinations are administered year-round using computerized testing.


AAPT certification exams offer Phlebotomist the opportunity to receive recognition of their knowledge, skills, ability and proficiency. AAPT certification demonstrates ultimate professionalism. At AAPT we are using “psychometric” principles of exam development, course building and course building to exceed industry standards.

Qualifications

Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)


Route 1
-High School Diploma or equivalent
-Completion of an approved Phlebotomy Program with a minimum of 80 hours including an extern ship.
- A minimum of 50 successful venipunctures and 10 capillary collections

Route 2
-High School Diploma or equivalent
-Documentation of 1 year of job related experience

Phlebotomy Instructor
-Must be a Certified Phlebotomy Technician
-Documentation of 3 years of job related experience
-Documentation of teaching experience at a minimum 1 year

Re-Certification

AAPT established a re-certification policy as a means for Certified Phlebotomists to demonstrate their continued competence to their peers, patients, and employer. AAPT will mail re-certification information and applications to all Certified Phlebotomists approximately 6 months prior to their expiration dates. Upon certification, individuals will receive a new i.d. card with the updated expiration date.

Description - Phlebotomists collects specimens from patients for clinical analysis and diagnosis. They act as ambassadors of the clinical laboratories. Consequently, they must have excellent customer service skills as they interact with a diverse patient population. Physicians use the results of blood work to assist them in treating and diagnosing patients up to 70% of the time. Therefore, the phlebotomist must collect quality results to ensure physicians are getting optimal results to aid in the treatment of patients.

Requirements - Requirements include HS graduation (or equivalent); and
Path 1. Graduation from an AAPTT-approved Phlebotomy Technician program ; or
Path 2. One year of full-time employment (2080 hrs) or equivalent part-time employment as a Phlebotomy Technician.
Note: A letter from the employer documenting working experience is required for candidates seeking Path 2 qualifications.

 

Phlebotomy Instructor (CPI)


Description – Are professionals with the responsibility of providing a quality of learning experience to students. Phlebotomy Instructors work in a variety of settings including hospitals, community colleges and medical corporations. Phlebotomy instructors facilitate the learning of industry standards using a blended approach to teaching to maximize adult learning concepts.

Requirements - Must be a certified phlebotomist with an accredited certification agency, LPN or RN; and
1. A minimal of five years documented work experience in performing phlebotomy; and
2. A minimal of one year documented teaching experience; and
3. Submission of a detailed course outline and syllabus that must be approved by AAPT Advisory Board


Medical Laboratory Assistant (CMLA)


Description – Are multi-skilled laboratory personnel that assist in the performance of routine laboratory testing and other clinical laboratory tasks as permitted. In addition, they perform routine phlebotomy procedures, specimen processing and quality control.
Requirements – Requirements include HS graduation (or equivalent) and completion of an AAPT approved phlebotomy program.

 

Certified_Phlebotomist_Pin


Once you have completed the Phlebotomy Technician course and/or Phlebotomy Instructor course you will receive:

* The title of Certified Phlebotomy Technician OR

* Certified Phlebotomy Instructor AND

* Certificate stating your completion (1st class mailer)

* The Academy of Phlebotomy Technicians Lapel Pin, located above

* Quarterly Newsletters stating the upcoming events for AAPT and new information in the world of Phlebotomy

Washington Post

The Washington Post has posed an interesting fact about who and what are Phlebotomists, and why it is so important that they are certified. "Most patients don't realize that the person sticking the needle in their arm today could have been flipping burgers last week." This was a quote given by Dennis Ernst, a veteran phlebotomist/runs the resource center in Ramey, Ind.)

"Phlebotomy a topic in laboratory medicine for the professional," is the introduction to the book, "Phlebotomy for Nurses," written by Dennis J. Ernst, MT, whom has been involved with phlebotomy for over 20 years.


 

Director's Corner

Darrell_LeaDarrell Lea, M.Ed. was appointed as AAPTs national director by the Advisory Board in 2006. He has addressed audiences across the country with his fascinating presentations on healthcare and management topics including but not limited to legal matters in phlebotomy, infection control, customer service and quality assurance . He has also served as keynote speaker at several commencements at career schools and colleges.

He has also published articles for several companies. He is an educator that shares his time and knowledge with students and healthcare workers by providing seminars, in-services and workshops. In addition, he is a training specialist at Quest Diagnostics Laboratory where he is responsible for the training program that serves hundreds of phlebotomist. He is also adjunct faculty at several colleges and universities and serves on several boards that develop standards in practice in multiple disciplines.

His goal is to provide those in healthcare who are responsible for collecting blood on patients with all the necessary tools to be successful. However, his primary goal is to ensure that patient safety is not compromised. As a consequence, he will continue to lead the push to call for mandatory certification for personnel that collect blood specimens.
